Be the Change You Want to See in the World

November 27, 2020  by Dr. Suki Munsell

We are invited in many ways to be the change we want to see in the world.
Wear a mask. Drive courteously. Wait your turn. Don’t interrupt. Pick up litter. Leave only footprints. Plant trees. Do unto others.

Life is a Creative Act
Daily we make and remake our world, our relationships, our bodies, ourselves. Each moment is an invitation to choice. To yes or no. To empowerment.

“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world,” we are reminded by Mahatma Gandhi, “as in being able to remake ourselves. As we change, the world changes.”

Living in an Age of Extinction
Life on this planet, as I’ve known it, is imperiled and disappearing fast. My heart shudders to think of the death of species and cultures that my consumptive lifestyle has inadvertently wrought. I am committed to changing my ways.

How I Choose
By bent of nature, nurture, and training, I walk a Body Path. My body informs my choices. She carries the wisdom of millennia, the evolution of eons, vast stores of energy born of earth, water, ether, and fire. She is my very own part off Mother Nature.

My mind, experience-shaped and culturally constructed, is influenced by winds of emotions and thoughts that I often believe are true – only to notice them changing the next hour or days.

I’ve Never Caught my Body in a Lie
I seek her natural knowing. She grounds me in the present moment where I have power. She moves joyful, teaches me balance from moment to moment, and protects me from depression. She gives me common and uncommon senses, to see and feel others, and to hear their voices – until my mind interrupts and rushes me off to handle my omnipresent To Do List.

I Turn to Nature as Teacher and Guide
I raise vegetables. Talk to plants and animals. Take meals outside. Watch the weather pass. “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” Practice 14 hours of intermittent fasting. Have breakfast like a Queen, lunch like a princess, and supper like a pauper.

I watch anything David Attenborough. Am inspired by The Age of Nature on PBS and thrill to The Photo Ark. Daily I dose myself with Nature365.

I devour books like Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific knowledge and the Teaching of Plants and All We Can Save, Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.

I recycle, reuse, repair, re-purpose, re-gift and reduce, reduce, reduce.

Russell and I donate to planting treesfeeding people, hiring lawyers for the environment, saving the oceans and more. We strive each day to lower our carbon footprint and support organizations building a cleaner economy.

Each of Us Plays a Vital Role
But it’s not about what we do. It’s about what we collectively can do to rebuild a more equitable, healthy, and happy life together on earth. We must do it as quickly as possible.

Our Contribution is Mindful Movement
Teaching blesses our hearts. We are grateful to be in your life and for your participation in ours.
